Building and Supporting The Medical Education Continuum in California.
California has one of the lowest primary care physician-to-patient ratios in the nation. Thirty-one of the state’s 58 counties lack enough primary care physicians to meet national standards, and California will need an additional 8,243 primary care physicians by 2030, a 32% increase. Nearly 7 million Californians, many of them people of color, live in federally designated health professional shortage areas. GME Expansion for all specialties and subspecialties is also needed to meet California's needs.
PHC works with communities and health care leaders across the state to strengthen medical education and graduate medical education to expand California’s physician workforce. Through statewide and regional convenings, ongoing peer learning and consultation, PHC connects leaders, shares effective approaches and supports efforts to grow physician training in rural and underserved communities.
